Metabolic Cell Injury
Overview |
---|
- Metabolic Cell Injury occurs when cells or tissue do not receive sufficient reactants to carry out normal processes of metabolism critical for functionality and survival. These reactants include nutrients and oxygen, both of which are delivered to cells and tissues by blood. Metabolic injury can occur due to an isolated lack of oxygen within the blood perfusing a tissue, known as Hypoxia. However, in most cases metabolic injury occurs when there is insufficient blood perfusion of a tissue, known as Ischemia, which yields a combined insufficiency of both nutrients and oxygen. When Ischemia does occur, sudden reperfusion of the tissue with fresh blood can in fact lead to further injury, a process known as Reperfusion Injury.
