Dysmotility Diarrhea

- Excessive bowel motility reduces transit time of ingested food within the alimentary tract and may not provide sufficient time for proper GI Digestion and Absorption, thus causing diarrhea. While bowel hypermotility is likely a contributing cause to other pathophysiologies of diarrhea discussed under diarrhea, isolated dysmotility as a primary cause of diarrhea is relatively rare. The primary etiologies resulting in primary dysmotility diarrhea are hyperthyroidism and carcinoid syndrome although certain drugs may also be a cause.
